Real Life Couple Parallels 'The Kids are All Right'

Long time partners Dori and Jennifer were surprised to discover that their lives closely parallel those of the lesbian couple played by Annette Bening and Julianne Moore in the new film, "The Kids Are All Right". Dori and Jennifer each bore a child using the same sperm donor from Fairfax Cryobank, a major provider of donor sperm. (In the film, Bening and Moore each bear a child using the same donor. Both of Dori and Jennifer's children were conceived using Dori's eggs, although Jennifer carried one of the pregnancies.)

One of the partners stays home with the two children, while the other works, just like the characters in the film. Now, however, Dori and Jennifer are considering having a third child and hope to use the same donor, but they would not welcome the sudden appearance of the donor as an active participant in their family life.

Dori and Jennifer choose an anonymous sperm donor from Fairfax Cryobank to conceive their son, age 2 1/2 and their daughter, 11 months. "We entertained the idea of using a close friend as a donor, but eventually decided that an anonymous donor was the best choice for us," says Jennifer. "We believe our children will be just fine."

Health was a priority for the couple when they selected a donor. Clients seeking a donor from Fairfax Cryobank have access to extensive health information about donors, including multi-generational health histories, test results, physical descriptions, childhood and "lifetime" photos and more. They also learn about the donor's education, talents, hobbies and can even find out his astrological sign, favorite pets and more personal details.

The one thing they do not learn about an anonymous donor is his name, just as donors never learn the names of recipients. (Prospective parents can choose an ID Consent donor from Fairfax Cryobank if they would like to give a child the option of receiving contact information for their donor when the child reaches age 18. No contact or identifying information is provided to the patients or the donor.)
